Universidad Mayor is a private, non-profit organization founded on February 13, 1988.  Its statutes are found registered in the Ministry of Education of Chile, Record of Universities, Folio C, N° 13.  Its operating license was given on May 13, 1988 and it began working in August of the same year.  UM operates in two main sites:  Santiago (capital of the country), with 6 campuses; and Temuco (750 km south from Santiago) concentrated in only one campus.

 

UM holds an enrollment rate near to 15,000 students who are distributed in 72 undergraduate degree programs in Santiago and Temuco, 49 Master programs, and 41 specializations programs leading to a certificate. 

 

UM offers undergraduate level programs which lead to the Bachelor´s degree and then to a Professional Degree, all of which are officially acknowledged by the State and are comparable to the ones given by traditional public universities.  In the same way, it offers Master programs and Medical and Dentistry specializations.

 

On the other hand, the institution has generated more than 8,000 professionals, most of which are associated to Circulo Mayor, an independent organization with partial support from UM.

 

UM is governed by a Board of Directors which takes on the higher management duties and constitutes the highest hierarchy body.  Other main authorities are:  President, Vice-President of Academic Affairs, Vice-President of Development, Vice-President of Administration and Finances, Regional Vice-President (campus Temuco), General Secretariat. Relevant Office Heads are: General Academics, Institutional Research and Quality Assurance, Institutional Planning, Student Affairs, International Affairs, General Development, Admissions, Graduate Studies, Extension Services, Communications and Research.

 

In the educational scope, the UM is structured in 9 Colleges led by their Deans and 2 Institutes chaired by Directors. The Colleges are organized in  42 Professional Schools, and  there is also a Music Conservatory offering  programs in 9 specialties.  College Deans and  Institute Directors, as well as School Directors are responsible for the administration of teaching staff and of curriculum supervision within a decentralized frame of work.

 

Academic activities are conducted by approximately 2,000 professors supported by near 600 other non-academic professionals.  

 

UM holds more than 242 academic agreements with universities from 44 countries in America, Europe and Asia (over an 80% are active), in which near 600 exchange students are involved, including foreigners coming to UM and Chileans going abroad.

 

UM is located in a total area of 235,000 sq ft of buildings, which include 360 classrooms, 125 labs, 7  libraries, 6 auditoriums, one theatre, one hospital, several music rooms, 2 exhibition rooms, several specialized rooms (medical and dental Clinics, psychology rooms, dental units, radiology rooms, operating theatres, multipurpose art rooms, TV studios), 10 cafeterias and 13 multipurpose sport courts, including one stadium.  UM´s Library System includes seven locations:  six in the Santiago campuses and one in the Temuco campus, all on line.
