Perfil Profesional
The student who graduates from the program of Obstetrics and Childcare of Universidad Mayor will be a professional capable of working with a humanist-scientific vision and, in a relevant and competent manner, in the fields of Obstetrics, Gynecology, Neonatology, Management and Education independently or as part of a health team, within the private or public sector, clinical or administrative. In this context, he/she will be able to effectively activate all of the resources developed during his/her professional training process so as to develop networks with other professionals and/or specialists, and as part of multi and interdisciplinary teams which converge in this area.
He/she will be a professional who is aware of and committed to the reality of the world he/she is part of, being able to lead work teams based on the assistance and caring of the woman, the family and the community.
In the development of his/her activities he/she will show competencies and abilities for the management, promotion and healthcare of the woman, couple, family and community, using the available technological tools.
He/she will develop his/her work with a humane and integral visión in all levels of complexity with social responsibility and ethical criteria, being a leader in his/her profesional role in the following areas:
•Obstetrics: he/she will attend to under his/her own responsibility pregnancy, childbirth and puerperium.
•Neonatology: he/she will competently carry out the integral assistance of the new born healthy or ill.
•Gynecology: he/she will carry out an integral assistance of the woman during her entire vital cycle, in the different areas of sexual and/or reproductive health of people.
Likewise, in these areas he/she will identify and timely refer the pathology, being part of the treatment and rehabilitation of morbidity.
In his/her work he/she will show leadership, pro-activeness, respect and responsibility through permanent training, being known for his/her entrepreneurial and innovative spirit in the different professional development areas.
Regarding managerial skills, he/she will be able to understand, apply and develop the models related to the objectives of the current public policies, promoting a safe and affable work environment for the personnel as well as for patients.
In his/her professional performance he/she will be capable of developing critical and reflective thinking, allowing analyzing his/her setting and professional performance. Likewise, he/she will constructively accept the opinions that others have on his/her professional performance, taking them as positive feedback for improving his/her work. In this context, he/she will be able to establish empathic and cordial relations, effectively working in the work teams he/she is part of whether as a leader or in a collaborative manner.

The graduate from Universidad Mayor will show through his/her professional work the capacity of entrepreneurship which will allow him/her to creatively establish objectives for him/her or for others, make decisions in ambiguous situations and formulating the means leading to the accomplishment of objectives established; with criticism and self- criticism allowing a continual search of genuine solutions to problems, managing his/her own emotions enduring indecision and ambiguity; with basic research skills to design projects; with self- learning capacity which is evidenced through the search for relevant information, analysis and application of autonomous learning strategies and capacity to integrate inter and multi- professional teams.
Certificación de Competencias
Competency Certification System at the end of each block of CurrículumMayor
Universidad Mayor, through its curricular model assures student learning, by the evaluation and competency certification of the profiles stated in each block of CurriculumMayor. Depending on the program, by the end of the 2nd or 3rd year, students undergo the first competency evaluation. The performance is evaluated in a real or simulated evaluative situation in which the performance is evidenced based on the key competencies developed at the Bachelor level. The student advances to the Licentiate level and, again, undergoes the competency evaluation, including specific disciplinary or generic competencies; among the latter, the management of communicational skills, of basic research skills, scientific reasoning and quantitative tools, reasoning, critical analysis and self- criticism, skills to access and use the technological tools, especially the information ones, entrepreneurial capacity and project administration, self- learning and personal development, appreciation of the historical- social and cultural reality of Chile and the world, valuing the role he/she plays in his/her development. The student concludes his/her educational stage at the Professional level, it is here, where the competencies engaged in the graduating profile should represent the response to acting competently as CurriculumMayor assures it in its educational offer. The Evaluation and Certification of Competency System has the objective of evaluating the effectiveness of the professional and generic competencies of the students, according to the UM educational model. This process adds value to the education, since apart from the academic certification the student obtains the performance certification of the evaluated competencies.
