The current Universidad Mayor Educational Model is consolidated in the CurrículumMayor, which is implemented since 2005. CurriculumMayor frames the curriculum of each one of the undergraduate degree programs and is structured in three Curricular Blocks: Initial, Disciplinary and Professional which lead to the certifications of a Bachelor’s Degree, a Licentiate Degree and a Professional Degree, respectively. It is an option to continue to a Specialized Block which grants a graduate or post-graduate certification (Master’s, Specialization or equivalent). The CurrículumMayor is comprised by four Educational Areas which cross all the three curricular blocks: Specific Education and Basic Education which both focus on professional competencies, and those of General Education and Management Education which broaden the cultural horizon and personal development, while enhancing the institutional educational seal.
The CurrículumMayor constitutes a requirement and an educational philosophy, adapting the education of professionals to the requirements of a current and balanced education, enriching the university experience which coincides with a particularly important personal development stage of the student. It constitutes a requirement due to the fact that, in the pursuit for a professional degree, the student must study, approve courses, and carry out activities within the subject matters that comprise it and which have relation with:
1) The principles and specific competencies that are characteristic of the profession; 2) The contents that sustain the disciplines and professional studies;
3) The concepts and mechanisms that facilitate the work of the professional development, which contributes to an element of the institutional educational seal; and 4) The activities which broaden the cultural spectrum and develop or enhance dimensions and general competencies within the cognitive, affective and psychomotor areas.
The CurriculumMayor is also an educational philosophy since it is based on the conviction that each graduated student at the Universidad Mayor becomes an exceptionally educated person, in terms of knowledge and abilities, understanding cultural diversity and having an attitude to approach problems within the ethical field, and prepared to successfully perform a profession in a global and competitive world.
