INSTITUTIONAL HISTORY

Institutional History - Universidad Mayor

Two decades have passed by since we initiated the challenging task of contributing to the development of the country by educating well-rounded and entrepreneurial professionals. After twenty years, we witness a history of sustained growth, innovation and leadership in Higher Education.  The first indication of this spirit is evidenced in our foundation in 1988, when in place of creating an academic offer involving low investment degree programs – also called “chalk and black-board” programs – we decided to bet on a scientific-technological educational offer.  Civil Engineering and Architecture became our first two degree programs, constituting an unprecedented event within the setting of the rising private Chilean Higher Educational system. The years ahead witnessed an accelerated growth.

In 1989 we were the first private university to offer Agriculture and Forest Engineering; in 1991, the first to offer Veterinary Medicine and six years later, we ratified our leadership by creating the School of Dentistry.  In 1998, after opening the degree program of Medicine we became the pioneer private university in scientific-technological education. We ended the 20th century making a development decision we are proud of:  the creation of the Temuco Campus; decision which made us the first private autonomous university to found a regional campus.  The new millennium introduced us to a country of accelerated cultural and social changes. Science and technology became a central part in the development of the country and our path in university education was empowered by the creation of new degree programs in the health area and the implementation of their respective laboratories and clinics.  By 2004 we were provided with a dentistry, kinaesthetic, speech and language pathological and psychological clinic.

In 2005 we were accredited by the National Commission of Undergraduate Programs (CNAP in Spanish) and, subsequently along with our spirit of excellence and leadership, we decided to initiate an International accreditation process with the acknowledged north American accreditation agency, Middle States Commission on Higher Education, MSCHE, making us the first university in Latin America to reach the status of Candidate to Accreditation.  This milestone in our development not only renews our commitments to the country, but compels us to adapt our processes in order to reach quality standards shared by prestigious universities of the northern hemisphere.  In fact, the status of Candidate to Accreditation has allowed us to be a member of this exclusive group led by, among others, the universities of Princeton, Georgetown and Johns Hopkins.

In this way, 2008 takes us by surprise as being a consolidated university with plans to grow, develop and innovate.  Motivated by this challenge, we have implemented the program SAPMayor, allowing us to have access to state of the art technology in IT systems, updating our processes and accessing a system of university management practices of world class quality.  A complete milestone for celebrating these 20 years of institutional existence which we invite to celebrate with us through this postage stamp.
